One Simple Way Of Securing Your WordPress (or any CMS!) Based Website

CMS’s or Content Management Systems provide a simple (normally web based) method of creating and updating websites. One of the main ideas behind a CMS is that it negates the need of the owner / user to understand the intricacies of HTML / JAVASCRIPT & server side programming languages. Instead it provides an easy to use interface, which in many cases offer WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get) text editor that can be used to publish content.

WordPress is one such example of a CMS, which is specifically designed to create blogging sites. Joomla!, Drupal and CMS made simple are other examples

All of these CMS’s have an administration section which allow an author to login and post content, edit the look and feel, generally affect how the web site works. Obviously, its important that these areas are secured effectively to prevent unauthorised access!

Of course the authors of the CMS have thought of this, and you are generally required to enter a username and/or password to gain access to the administration area.  Secure enough? Maybe not! It depends on a number of factors, not least the strength of your password. (Tips on choosing a strong password can be found my SME network security post)
